Flying With a Baby

Flying with a baby for the first time feels like a big deal, but with a little planning it is very manageable. This cheat sheet pulls together what the TSA, the FAA, and the American Academy of Pediatrics actually say, so you can pack, board, and land with confidence. Keep it handy in your carry-on.

01Getting through security with baby stuff

Breast milk, formula, toddler drinks, and baby food (including puree pouches) are allowed in your carry-on in quantities over 3.4 ounces.
TSA treats them as medically necessary liquids, so they are exempt from the usual liquids limit and do not need to fit in a quart-size bag.

Tell the security officer at the start of screening that you have baby liquids over 3.4 ounces, and take them out of your bag for separate screening.

Strollers, baby carriers, and car seats go through the X-ray machine — take your baby out and carry them in your arms through the metal detector.
Gear too big for the belt gets a hands-on inspection instead, and you will not be separated from your child at any point.

02Seat or lap?

Children under 2 are allowed to fly on your lap, but the FAA strongly recommends securing your child in their own seat in an approved restraint sized to their weight.
A separate seat is not required by rule — it is a strong safety recommendation.

The FAA says the safest place for a child under 2 is an approved car seat in their own seat, not your lap — arms cannot hold a baby securely in unexpected turbulence.
Buying your baby a ticket is the only way to guarantee you can use the car seat on board.

Check your car seat's label at home before the trip: it should say "This restraint is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft."
Not every car seat is approved for airplanes, and one without the right label may have to be checked as baggage.

For toddlers 22 to 44 pounds (up to 40 inches tall), the FAA has certified a harness-type device — the Child Aviation Restraint System (CARES) — that works with the airplane's own seat belt.
It is approved for airplanes only, never for cars, and it is not for infants.

Install the car seat rear- or forward-facing exactly as its manual says, and choose a window seat rather than an aisle or exit row.
The AAP notes window seats keep little arms away from drink carts and hot spills, and exit rows are off-limits because adults there must help in an emergency.

03Gear logistics

Not using the car seat in flight? You can usually check it at the gate, often at no extra charge.

04Feeding and little ears

Feed your baby — breast, bottle, or pacifier — during takeoff and landing.

Do not give your baby a sedating medicine (like diphenhydramine) to keep them sleepy on the flight unless your pediatrician has specifically said it is okay.

05Where baby sleeps, and when to fly

The AAP suggests ideally waiting until your baby is 2 to 3 months old to fly.
Flying is generally considered safe once a newborn is at least 7 days old, but crowded airports raise a very young baby's chance of catching an illness.

Some airlines offer flat bassinets that attach to the bulkhead wall on long flights — most require babies to be under about 6 months or 20 pounds and not yet sitting up. Ask your airline when you book.

06Paperwork

A child's passport is an in-person errand: both parents or guardians must appear with the baby (or provide extra notarized paperwork), it is valid for 5 years, and it can never be renewed by mail.
Build in plenty of lead time before an international trip.
